If a safari seems a little too mainstream for you, why not take a look at our more unusual holidays in South Africa? Here are 8 lesser known destinations that are off-the-beaten-path and simply stunning!
1. The Swartberg Pass, Little Karoo
Considered to be one of the finest passes in the world, be prepared for a zigzagging journey that will offer you 27km of the most glorious views. Access it from Oudtshoorn and enjoy the quaint little town of Prince Albert on the other side.
2. Richtersveld National Park
The Northern Cape’s Richtersveld National Park offers a challenging terrain for 4×4 enthusiasts and is brimming with an abundance of bird life and game, not to mention over 650 indigenous plant species. This mountain desert is stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit.
2. Marakele National Park
A safari in the Kruger National Park is awesome, however, there are other game reserves that are as glorious and special, like the Marakele National Park in Limpopo. There is no shortage of animals, including the elusive leopard. This is a great alternative to the Kruger National Park.
4. Vanrhynsdorp and Nieuwoudtville
Vanrhynsdorp and Nieuwoudtville are two glorious places for plant lovers. Vanrhynsdorp is near to the semi-arid Nama Karoo Desert, and has the biggest succulent nursery in the world with over 600 species. Every year, around August and September the whole area is transformed into a colourful spectacular when the wildflowers start blooming. Travel over Van Rhyn’s Pass to Nieuwoudtville and enjoy the magnificent views. At Nieuwoudtville, you can visit the Hantam Botanical Garden, an International Biodiversity Hotspot which is visited every year by global botanists and researchers. There are self-guided walks, and it is paradise for birdwatchers, with large population of cranes, marsh birds and eagles. Only 20 minutes away is the Kokerboom Forest with row upon row of quiver trees. Try to get there in time to take in one of its spectacular sunsets.
With the Kleinrivier running through it, mountain views, and just half an hour from the sea-side town of Hermanus, Stanford is ideal for a laid-back getaway in a quaint and historic village. Visit the antique stores, restaurants, vineyards or coffee shops, or go horse riding, enjoy boat cruises, hikes, bird watching and Great White Shark Cage diving
Part of the Garden Route, this ‘slow town’ is a gem. Here you can slow down to the speed of nature and engage in many enjoyable outdoor activities. Laze next to the lagoon or on the beach, enjoy swimming, canoeing, fishing or eat seafood. There are also many hiking and cycling trails. And if it’s adventure you’re after, why not enrol in a paragliding course? Everything you want in one beautiful little town.
Peace, silence, tranquillity and lots of space to explore are only some of the terms to describe the beautiful West Coast. And if you throw in the Carinus Bridge, bokkoms, flamingos, fisherfolk and stunning long pristine beaches, then you know you’re in Velddrif!
Velddrif is just a bit further than Langebaan and is very small. If you are on the West Coast, you are sure to find a place that resonates with your heart and that will become a firm favourite holiday destination.
